 Inn by the Sea is very involved with the community all year long, but one of the highlights is their annual Holiday Giving Tree where guests are invited to keep paper ornaments made by local school children in exchange for gifts for community members who are less fortunate. This tree collects warm hats, mittens and gloves, scarves, and chapsticks which Project GRACE then shares with kids throughout the community. Helping Kids Succeed at School Thanks to a community-wide effort, more than 90 kids started school prepared for learning. It was an outstanding community-wide effort to provide backpacks and school supplies for all who turned to us for a helping hand. Once again we were impressed by the generosity and care put into making each of the packs 'just right' for the kids. With the help of neighbors, local businesses, service clubs, and faith communities, dozens of local families could equip their kids with the basics: sturdy new backpacks, paper, notebooks, pens and pencils, rulers and glue sticks. We are very grateful to all who volunteered their time, brought in a full pack, gave supplies, sponsored a child's backpack, or hosted a collection drive or drop-off site. Whether you gave a little or a lot, it added up to a great start for the kids. Partners included: Alere, Blue Point Congregational Church, St. Maximilian-Kolbe Church, Kiwanis of Scarborough, Rotary Club of Scarborough, Foy Insurance, Michelle Raber State Farm Insurance, The Study Hall, Scarborough Public Library, Biddeford Savings Bank, Town & Country Federal Credit Union, Gorham Savings Bank, Saco Biddeford Savings Bank, Ruth's Reusable Resources, Buy Local Scarborough, and many many more!

Project GRACE and Scarborough School Nutrition Program Collaborate to Feed Hungry School Children
Project GRACE tries to improve the lives of our neighbors by identifying both those in need and those willing to share their gifts, and coordinating the interchange in a compassionate, confidential manner. In that spirit, at a recent school board meeting, Project GRACE awarded Scarborough schools a $2,500 grant for the current school year. The School Nutrition program, led by director Judy Campbell, has been receiving funding from Project GRACE for the past few years. The long-standing partnership helps students get the daily nutrition required for achieving success at school. School staff notice when kids come to school hungry, they see when a child simply does not get enough nutritious meals at home. The Project GRACE grant extends the reach of the school nutrition program by paying for milk and snacks, breakfasts and lunches, and second helpings, for students whose families are struggling to make ends meet. Thanks to our partnership, now in its second year, with Citizen's Energy, more than 15,000 gallons of heating assistance is helping neighbors keep warm this Spring. The program, also known as Joe4Oil, gives vouchers for 100 gallons of oil or kerosene to income eligible families facing hardships like loss of income or medical or housing issues. Working with our partners in neighboring communities, Project GRACE volunteers facilitated the connection to the Massachussetts-based program for families in Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Buxton, Porter, Yarmouth, and Bucksport. We also helped our friends at Freeport Community Services connect directly to Joe4Oil.
The Scarborough Middle School wanted to know which school team would BEE the smartest! Family, friends, and teachers turned out to cheer the 22 teams at the first annual Junior Trivia Bee. Organized by the Builders Club and sponsored by the Scarborough Kiwanis Club, the Junior Bee made an outstanding debut on April 9th at Wentworth Cafe.

Project GRACE and its partners, including the Scarborough Fire and Police Departments, Scarborough Public Library, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Kiwanis, Volunteers in Police Service, Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center, Pine Point Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion, Town of Scarborough, Buy Local Scarborough, and Boy Scout Troop 47 hosted another successful community-spirited "Rally to Keep Our Neighbors Warm." >>View Pictures Despite the freezing cold and a blizzard warning, dozens of hearty souls turned out for the rally to show their neighbors some love on a frigid Valentine's morning, raising funds for fuel assistance for their neighbors. It was just 3 degrees outside, but inside the Oak Hill fire station there was plenty of warmth and good cheer. "We're just trying to make sure no one is left in the cold, and we are deeply thankful to all who came to the Rally or made a gift to the fuel fund." says Project GRACE's executive director, Steffi Cox. "This is a good town, with many compassionate and caring people, who know it's important to look out for one another. When it comes down to it, it's not hard to be the change, to do something meaningful, to give a lift to someone else. And this Rally shows it can be fun, too." In three short hours, the groups raised close to $7,800 with a raffle and bake sale, bottle and can collection, and even a drive-through the fire house to give on the fly. Local scout, Ethan Boardman, is a familiar face to many business leaders all over town. For the past two years Ethan has been making the rounds alongside his grandfather, Dick Boardman, co-founder of Buy Local Scarborough. While Dick promotes local connections that provide continuing opportunities for entrepreneurs and help to build a sustainable local economy, Ethan encourages local business leaders to save their returnable cans and bottles for a good cause. This coming Saturday, Ethan and Boy Scout Troop 47 are aiming to collect enough returnable bottles and cans to fill 100 CLYNK bags for Project GRACE. Stop by during Project GRACE’s “Rally to Keep Your Neighbors Warm” at the Oak Hill Firehouse on Saturday, February 14th (9-Noon) to help the scouts reach their goal! Local artists and artisans are teaming up to help their neighbors with a raffle of fine crafts. A bright and beautifully sewn bag by quilter Liane Giambalvo, a soft handknit sampler of delicate chain work by Karen Cunningham and friends, stoneware pottery bowl by Bill Cox, and original watercolor painting by Elizabeth Saltonstall will be raffled to help our neighbors struggling to pay steep heating bills. Thanks to our good friends at R J Grondin and Sons and Coastline Irrigation, we have a garden!
R J Grondin & Sons volunteered time and materials to dig the plot and turn the earth and level the plot just before Thanksgiving. Coastline Irrigation installed a fully automated irrigation system which is expandable as needed. A rain gauge is also part of the system, so that it won’t water when raining. This phase of the garden was generously funded by a grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. Satisfy your sweet tooth, and help Project GRACE, during this annual holiday bake sale. It is thanks to the efforts of the whole community that we can help our neighbors have a more joyful holiday season. We are already hearing from families who are worried about how they'll keep their homes warm, put food on the table, and make sure their kids find a few items under the tree. Tis the season for sharing and caring. Will you help a neighbor? Thank you and congratulations to all joining in the fun of the 7th Annual Trivia Bee to benefit Project GRACE! Twenty-one teams competed for top honors at the Bee.
Defending champions, Doug Bennett, Brett Coffin, and Andy Mullin - the Scarborough Middle School Teachers - playing as B.A.D. (aka World Serious), made it into the final round with ease. But in the end the trophy went to returning champs, Patrick O'Reilly, Peter Dufour, and Walker Matthews of Macpage LLC playing as Thunder Buddies! Top honors were also given for Best Costume (Bee Energized), Best Team Name (Bee Sharp), Most Enthusiastic Supporters (Pied Pipers), and the "Bee-Knees" Buzz Award (Scarborough Grounds). Congratulations, all! We appreciate the teams for playing, the volunteers, our sponsors, and all who attended to cheer their favorite team - you made this Bee a great success for Project GRACE. Thank you!! Highland Avenue Greenhouse & Farm Market is hosting their 3rd annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 18th. The festival is fast becoming one of Scarborough's favorite Fall traditions. With games, refreshments, pony rides and much more - the festival is family-friendly fun for all ages. This year, proceeds from the event will benefit Project GRACE, and wewill use the gift to support the Scarborough Community Garden!

The Scarborough Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) named recipients of its 2013 Outstanding Business Awards at the group’s 28th annual meeting held at the Black Point Inn. “The companies receiving awards this year go beyond running great businesses,” said SEDCO Executive Director Karen Martin. “They’ve become part of the Scarborough landscape and have made Scarborough a better community.”Stuart Axelrod, chairman of SEDCO’s board of directors, noted that the selection of all four honorees was unanimous.
